Interested in what our
handmade gem stone jewelry is all about?
We use many natural gemstones (and
some man-made ones too) as centerpieces for our handcrafted gemstone jewelry,
with wire sculpted around the bead (as in
our rings) or with an unusually shaped
gemstone hung on a satin cord (as in
our pendants).
Our earrings dangle the stones from
earwires, and
our necklaces and
bracelets use stretch material so they
are easy to put on.
We have listed some of the stone
characteristics of our handcrafted gemstone jewelry here, so you can get
acquainted with the gemstones that make up your handmade gem stone jewelry.
Soon you will be old friends!
Amethyst
Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar
Some minerals grow crystals inside
rock formations, called "drusy cavities" or geodes. In these cases, liquids
have collected inside hollow stones and then crystalize. The Amethyst is a
well-known representative of this occurrance.
Green Aventurine
India, Brazil, Russia
Green Aventurine is a light green
semi-opaque gemstone.
Azurite-Malachite
California, USA
Beautiful green mixed with bright
blue.
Black Onyx
Brazil
One of the most well-known of
gemstones, Black Onyx is an opaque solid black which has a look of understated
elegance.
Cats Eye
The "cats eye" effect has a very
sound scientific explanation - there are microscopic hollow channels that run
through the stone, refracting light through the clear stone and creating an
interference pattern of light rays. Cats eye stones are man-made in many
different colors; however, the tiger eye gemstone is the natural stone that is
the model for the man-made cats eye stones.
Carnelian
India, Brazil, Uruguay
Carnelian is a translucent
gemstone with a solid orange-red color. The typical Carnelian with the
loveliest red tones comes from India.
Flourite
Found worldwide
Some flourites from China bear pyrite
crystals on the surface which are very beautiful. Also marvelous are flourites
that have tiny quartz crystals on them - they glitter here and there with
pyrite.
Freshwater Pearls
Found worldwide; the most
renowned freshwater pearls are cultivated and grown in Lake Biwa in Japan.
Freshwater Pearls have a wide
variety of appearances, from smooth to wrinkled skin and from perfectly round
to oblong. Colors vary from pearly alabaster white to silvery gray. While they are more technically "shells", Freshwater Pearls are typically classified with gemstones because of their beauty.
Goldstone
Goldstone is a man-made gemstone
with flecks of glitter, usually red-brown or dark midnight blue with sparkles.
Although man-made, Goldstone is usually categorized with gemstones because of
its beauty.
Hematite
England, Germany, United States,
Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, Spain, Brazil, New Zealand, Elba
Hematite
is a natural stone with a lot of iron in it, which gives its unique shiny
steel-gray color and makes it
the perfect ring to go with any
outfit. Hematite is our most popular ring sold in 20 years of making
handcrafted gemstone jewelry. Polished hematite has a metallic look and a
silvery dark-gray glow. During its polishing, the grinding water turns to
blood red, which is why it is also called bloodstone (although there is also another natural gemstone called bloodstone).
Lapis Lazuli
Afghanistan, Russia, Chile
Genuine Lapis Lazuli is deep blue
with midnight blue and black inclusions, and is characterized by flecks of
pyrite.
LeopardSkin Jasper
Brazil
LeopardSkin Jasper is named for
the leopard because of the spots it proudly displays. Black and dark brown
spots frolic randomly across a tan or pink background, with some red thrown in
for seasoning!
Malachite
Ural Mountains, Zaire,
Austrailia, Chile, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and United States
Malachite is a rich deep green
gemstone with swirls and stripes of black running through it.
Moonstone
Sri Lanka, India, United States,
Tanzania
Moonstone has a soft gray
background with a translucent white "glow".
Moss Agate
China, United States
A typical Moss Agate gemstone has
inclusions that look like moss, which are made of hornblende, a complex
silicate mineral. The White Moss Agate has very few green inclusions.
Red Jasper
Found worldwide
Red Jasper has a very
Southwestern flavor with a brick-red background and white and gray markings.
Rhodonite
United States, Australia, Russia,
India, Madagascar
Rhodonite has a deep pink background
with black and brown markings - very elegant.
Rock Crystal
Found worldwide
Rock Crystal, or simply crystal,
varies from a clear translucent and colorless gemstone to white opaque.
Rose Quartz
Brazil, South Africa, Madagascar
Rose Quarts is a pale pink
translucent gemstone. Be careful to guard it from extended exposure to
sunshine, as it will fade to a pinkish white color.
Mother of Pearl
Organic and shoreline oyster beds
Mother of Pearl is actually made from
the inner side of a mollusk shell, so it is made of the same substance as
pearls.
Snowflake Obsidian
United States and Mexico
Obsidian is a rock primarily made
when silica acid occurs in volcanic eruptions. As gas escapes from the
obsidian, radial white spots sometimes form in unique "snowflake" patterns.
Sodalite
Brazil, Canada, India, Namibia,
United States
Sodalite is a dark blue gemstone
with elegant white markings.
Tiger Eye
South Africa, Australia, Burma,
India, United States
Tiger Eye is a gemstone with
"chatoyancy", which means the color changes back and forth between two tones
when it is moved in the light - it "winks". This effect has a very sound
scientific explanation - there are microscopic hollow channels that run
through the stone, refracting light through the clear stone and creating an
interference pattern of light rays.
Tiger Iron
Australia
Tiger Eye is a gemstone with
"chatoyancy", which means the color changes back and forth between two tones
when it is moved in the light - it "winks". This effect has a very sound
scientific explanation - there are microscopic hollow channels that run
through the stone, refracting light through the clear stone and creating an
interference pattern of light rays. Tiger Iron is Tiger Eye with bands of
Hematite running through it, interspersing the brown "winks" with gray
"shines".
Unakite
United States, Rhodesia, Ireland
Unakite has a soft green background
with putty-colored markings - the personification of Springtime!
White Howlite
United States and Canada
White Howlite is a porous stone
with a white or off-white background and "veins" of gray running through it,
resembling marble.
